Deputy Media Director, Greenpeace India

A strategic media campaign and action plan is an integral part of every Greenpeace campaign. As the head of our Media Unit you will have the opportunity to use
your experience, interest and goodwill in the hard-news and soft-news industry to help us succeed in our environmental campaigns.


This is a new position created within our Communications team. You will report to the Communications Director and manage a relatively large team of 15 planned staff. We are committed to strengthening our media relations capacity and have been progressively investing in this unit and intend to do so over the next 2 years.


This is an exciting role for any media professional who is interested in news and its role in environmental campaigning. You will have the opportunity to lead a significant function for Greenpeace and influence the impact of our campaigns. 


What will you be doing?


Strategic direction and editorial design
Formulate and deliver effective editorial strategies and activities, in cooperation with the Communications Director.
Advice senior management on the formulation and execution of Greenpeace’s strategic editorial direction and communication design in conjunction with the Digital Media manager.
Maintain an overview of key external developments to support strategic direction.


Communication Strategy
Lead, develop, initiate and oversee the implementation of innovative, creative, pro-active and reactive hard-news communication strategies 
Ensure a consistent editorial message across all platforms (press, video, web and others) in line with our identity guidelines
Provide strategic editorial input into design of any communication program, using core communication principles, audience centered-thinking and understanding of delivery across multiple platforms. 


Editorial decisions, policy & protocols
Provide direct editorial input into our communications.
Take final editorial decisions to ensure a consistently high standard of Greenpeace hard-news output across all platforms to both internal and external clients.
Be the custodian and enforcer of editorial communications protocol. 
Develop editorial policies in line with the identity guidelines for all platforms with respective communications managers
Ensure adherence to these policies, in order to ensure consistency in communication content and presentation style. 
Develop effective protocols for reactive communication in cooperation with relevant other functions.


Material distribution
Coordinate distribution of all hard-news material and external media wires and outlets nationally and internationally after having established key message with relevant Unit heads and Directors. 
Ensure that legal, photo and video desks are working in alignment with legal and copyright guidelines.
Liaise with press journalists and PR agencies for placement of our material on national and international media outlets.


External Network
Build and maintain national and international networks with key allies, political fora, industry, NGOs, public and media 


Staff & Budget Management 
Provide line management and leadership to all team members in accordance with current management practices and policies.
Develop, monitor and authorize expenditure of the Unit


Deputising
Deputise for the Communications Director


Undertake any other tasks assigned by the Communications Director. 


What you need for this position
At least 5 years professional hard-news experience in a leadership capacity
Proven editorial track record in press, video, web, PR
Good understanding of political risk and ability input into program development
Spokesperson skills - Being the face of the campaign and the organisation. 
Good network of media contacts
Understanding of media environment
Strong news sense / editorial judgement
Management experience including remote and financial management
Excellent written and spoken English, one more language desirable and/or willingness to pick
A willing learner; an effective leader and implementer
Belief in and an understanding of Greenpeace’s mission and our core values


Working environment:
This job might entail some travel to Bangalore or other cities from time to time. There may be travel to on occasion for international meetings.


Whilst every effort is taken to keep normal working hours, the candidate must be willing to work longer hours on occasion.
